Troubleshooting

You will find resources to solve most problems at the Thayer Birding Software Help Desk.

Common problems you might encounter are listed below.

Sound Effects for Quiz Answers

Installation provides two sounds that play in a quiz for correct and incorrect answers. If they are not playing for you, make sure the entire path in the settings box is correct. The speaker icon will be grayed if the sounds are not in the displayed path.

Slow Quiz Loading

A Multiple Choice quiz might be slow to load if you have selected a broad range of species having pictures and sound or video as media choices. Multiple Choice quizzes can also be slowed down if you have Allow Clues set to "on".

Media

You may see the error message is "Media not found"

To fix this, make sure the CD is in the CD-ROM drive of your computer, with the printed side facing up. Sometimes you know your CD-ROM is already in the CD-ROM drive or you copied the media to a hard drive. This can happen for various reasons.

In all these cases, you can point the software to the correct path by changing the paths by clicking Tools and then clicking Options and then clicking Media:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into a drive. If you have copied media to a hard drive, skip this step.

  2. When the error message appears, click Cancel. The eViewer should open with no eField Guide loaded.

  3. From File click Options and then click Media. This opens a dialog box showing you the path used by the software. It might show something like D:\program files\Thayer Birding Software\eViewer 3.9\media\. If this is the path that appears, you have a strange problem. Contact Thayer Birding Software by completing a Help Desk Ticket at www.ThayerBirding.com.

  4. If this is not the path that appears, change it to the path shown above. Or, if you installed the program on a different drive than the D drive, just change the drive letter to the proper letter.

  1. Click OK when finished. A confirmation message appears.

  2. Click image\ebx_-1872421606.gif on the toolbar to open your Field Guide. If this fails, repeat and look for spelling, backslash, and folder name errors.
